Hello, and welcome to the Website of the WEST YORKSHIRE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.

On June 5th 1973, a group of 20 people met in Pontefract Library and the West Yorkshire Astronomical Society, or WYAS was formed. The society aims to promote the science of astronomy to its members and   the public. We are keen to promote astronomy to all ages and people with special needs. To this end we are seeking ways to make our facilities accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities.

Boasting one of the largest telescopes in Yorkshire and a 14'' Meade LX200 and a 10'' LX200, a Starlight Express MX5-C CCD camera an Astro-Vid  and a highly advanced Solar Telescope, we are committed to sharing both our knowledge of astronomy and our equipment to the public and members. With the growth of the internet over the last few years, we have decided that a refurbishment to the WYAS website was needed. Through the help of the new refurbished website we hope to extend our reach to astronomers worldwide. The site hopes to offer anybody with an interest in astronomy some useful information that you are free to use.

Inside the WYAS website we hope to include articles written by our members on many topics, from constructing a telescope to techniques related to CCD astronomy. We also hope to include many images taken by our members and the visiting public.

One of the more anticipated additions that we hope to include is a comprehensive list of UK astronomical societies. Although we feel we have a lot to offer the astronomical community as a society, we realise that we are not the only society in the U.K. keen on promoting astronomy, and realising that not everyone interested in astronomy knows where their nearest society is, we feel it would be a good idea to include this list.
